How LEDs Have Transformed Lighting Design

The advent of cutting-edge LED technology has dramatically affected lighting over the past decade. No longer driven by a particular lighting source, designers now have free reign to experiment with form and special effects. We asked some of our favourite designers to discuss the ways LEDs have influenced their work, from innovation and lighting precision to energy efficiency and more.

MartĆn AzĆŗa, who created Vibiaā€™s Halo pendant, explains it this way: “The LED is synonymous with creativity. It has been a revolutionary shift in all things related to lighting, greatly diversifying it.ā€

The designer of Algorithm (available in early 2018), Toan Nguyen, concurs. ā€œUnlike traditional lighting, LEDs donā€™t restrict the shape of a lamp.ā€ Rather than creating fixtures with certain lighting sources in mind, ā€œnow each lamp has its own LED, especially manufactured for it,ā€ says Antoni Arola, who designed Flamingo for Vibia (available in early 2018).

Designers cite LEDsā€™ small size as a critical factor in the enhanced creativity. “Lamps can take on a more graphic character,ā€ says AzĆŗa, “reduced in many cases to pure and essential elements.ā€

Halo, a model of minimalism, embodies this idea with LEDs tucked away in its understated silhouette. ā€œMiniaturizing the light source,ā€ says Jeanette Altherr of Lievore Altherr Studio, ā€œfrees us up to play with transparency and translucency, to balance the physical with the ethereal.ā€

Consuming up to 80% less electricity than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs, energy efficiency offers another design advantage. Nguyenā€™s Algorithm, with its striking ā€œsurface of lighting points was possible only with LEDs,ā€ he states.

ā€œTraditional lighting sources would have wasted a huge amount of energy and produced an exaggerated amount of unnecessary lumens and heat.ā€

LEDs also offer designers myriad technical benefits. ā€œThey allow for very controlled lighting of different zones while leaving other areas in the shadows,ā€ says AzĆŗa, a precision that produces ā€œluminous, almost magical objects.ā€ This ability to ā€œdirect the temperature and intensity of the light,ā€ Altherr states, ā€œhelps architects and interior designers create a narrative experience.ā€

Because LEDs typically emit intense light, efficient diffusers are important, according to Nguyen. With Algorithm, he placed the LEDs behind an opalescent blown-glass diffuser, deftly merging a timeless material with modern technology.

Arolaā€™s Flamingo deploys a series of shades to diffuse the lightā€”deconstructed shapes that produce gradations of indirect light. “Itā€™s as if the light is projected on a series of screens,ā€ Arola says, “something we couldnā€™t even have tried with bulbs.ā€
