A full-scale renovation by Italian architecture firm Carola Vannini transformed a Rome penthouse apartment into a light-filled aerie. The deft design celebrates centuries-old architectural details while lending the interiors a thoroughly modern look. Here, rough-hewn wooden beams and elaborate inlaid ceilings mingle with sleek contemporary furnishings and Vibia lighting.

An open kitchen and dining area feature a trio of North pendants by Arik Levy. Their spare, deconstructed silhouette separates the stem and shade in a dynamic system of adjustable parts.

The designers selected shades in varying sizes and heights, casting focused pools of LED-powered light in specific spots as needed. The individual lamps are connected by a network of slender intersecting rods to create a unified lighting scheme across the room that joins the space.

North’s black finish is simple and understated, nodding to the colour of the chairs and serving as a restrained counterpoint to the ornate green-and-gold design overhead.

Hanging from the double-height living room is the Wireflow pendant, also by Arik Levy. A modern reimagining of the classic chandelier, Wireflow is crafted of fine black electrical cables and fitted with a lower ring of LED terminals.

At once delicate yet dramatic, the oversized fixture traces an airy outline overhead. It draws the eye upwards, emphasizing the lofty ceiling yet allowing a clear view of the restored wood beams nearby. Distilled to its essence, it echoes the pared-down decor of the living room while adding a graphic element.
